Showstopper Challenge

Cake, representing a personal disaster

Cake, representing a personal disaster

Noel Fielding: "The judges would love you to make your biggest failure in cake form."

Alison Hammond: "That's right. We are looking for something that you would only tell your therapist and then make that into cake."

Noel Fielding: "Now, you must have at least two layers of sponge sandwiched together with something like a buttercream or a jam."

Alison Hammond: "And you must decorate it in a colourful and entertaining way."

Prue Leith: "It's a celebrity baker's Showstopper challenge, and we've set them a challenge of making their personal failure into a cake. I suppose it's a bit like turning their failure into a success, but that depends on what the cake comes out like when it comes to the decoration. That's the tricky bit. I think they have to be very artistic and have a good imagination to create this."

Culinary Learnings from the Showstopper

Rhod's NYE Midnight Express Cake

Rhod Gilbert: "Few years ago on New Year's Eve, somebody had the bright idea of making espresso martinis and then giving me them. I had one or six too many. We were sort of out and about on the beach kind of thing, and I thought, oh, no, these have gone straight through me. So I set off for home, running in the moonlight across a cliff path. I'm really clenching. I was running, got into my flat. Burst through the toilet door, shut the door when I absolutely exploded."

Alison Hammond: "Undeterred by his previous overindulgence, Rod is making an espresso martini flavoured cake with a coffee buttercream. He aims to recreate the scene of his midnight cliff path run with decorative icing and fondant figures and some surprise elements."

Rhod Gilbert: "I'm doing an immersive dining experience concept eating, which is mainly a way of saying my cake's going to be rubbish. So I'm going to try and distract from it with other things."

Yinka's Judgement Cake

Yinka Bokkini: "Chocolate is my favourite flavour, and as a vegan, it's been kind of tough to find that really luxurious chocolate experience. So I hope that this cake has that vibe to it."

"My biggest failure is something that never happened. So I read law at uni and then didn't go to law school, didn't follow it through, did nothing with it. It was really tough telling my dad, sort of him being super proud nigerian dad, telling everyone that he's going to have a lawyer for a daughter. And then I was like, I'm a DJ, so what I'm going to try and make for you is a judge. So a three tiered chocolate cake with a judge sitting in the cake about to bang the gavel."

Noel Fielding: "Yinka is the only baker who is working with vegan ingredients. Her chocolate sponge will be filled with a non dairy buttercream and she will sculpt various fondant elements to illustrate her scene."

Leigh's Foot Cake
Leigh's Foot Cake

I went snowboarding and I knocked off my toenail. My shoe felt like it was filled with water, but it was blood. It was like a horror film. And then the toenail came off and it grew back all wrong. So I had my matrix taken off. That's what it's called where it grows from, the matrix. It didn't grow back. Right. So I've got a sausage toe, so I'm making a foot.

Noel Fielding : "Hoping his sculpting will go less downhill than he's snowboarding. Lee will create his foot using a chocolate sponge covered in cocoa buttercream and decorated with a fondant icing, which he'll airbrush to create a skin like texture."

Danny's "DIY Disaster" Cake

Danny Drey: "When I was a young man, I had a child, very young, and me and my missus from a councillor estate, very proud of it. We had a little flat and I tried to build a wardrobe. So I've done it all, but I built myself into the wardrobe so I couldn't get out. I had to punch the back of it to get out. It was a disaster."

Noel Fielding: "Hoping to also pack a punch with the judges, Danny will stack his two sponges into eight layers sandwiched with american buttercream, before cutting a hole in the middle, pinata style."
