Showstopper Challenge

Cake, depicting a celebrity best friend

Cake, depicting a celebrity best friend

Noel Fielding: "Today the judges would like you to make a novelty cake depicting your famous best friend."

Alison Hammond: "Now, your cake must have at least two layers of sponge sandwiched with a filling of your choice."

Noel Fielding: "And your cake must be decorated to look just like your famous best friend."

Paul Hollywood; "Today's show stopper challenge is to portray their best celebrity friend in a sponge cake. So they've got to think of the bake first. Make the sponge, get it in the tin, get it baked so that it can cool in time to be decorated."

Prue Leith: "You don't want the cake too dry. Don't over bake it. You don't want to under bake it, so it collapses. There is no room for error in the tent today. This is the showstopper. We want this cake to be recognizable. It's got to look good ANDI want the flavor to taste of what I've been promised."

Culinary Learnings from the Showstopper

What is Victoria Sponge?
What is Victoria Sponge?

Victoria Sponge is made from self-raising (aka self-rising) flour, baking powder (for lightness), butter, sugar, eggs and milk. Traditionally, it is served as two sponges, one on top of another, sandwiched with cream and jam, and without any icing.

What is Chantilly Cream?
What is Chantilly Cream?

Chantilly cream, aka crème Chantilly, is a sweet whipped cream of French origin. It is named after the Château de Chantilly, a historic castle located in the town of Chantilly, northern France.

The cream is flavored with icing sugar (powdered sugar) in the ratio of 2 tablespoons sugar to each cup of cream. This amount of sugar will soften the peaks of the whipped cream and makes it less suitable for piping or holding its shape. Usually there is also some vanilla in a Chantilly Cream.
