Challenge:
Spectacular New-Year inspired Smash Cake

The judges were looking for an exquisite cake that is topped by, or encased in, a smashable chocolate shell.
The flavors and decorations were entirely up to the bakers, but the theme had to be 'New Year'.
Prue Leith: " A smash cake is about the event. I'm expecting dishes that shout of the New Year, and new beginnings."
Paul Hollywood: "The real challenge here is trying not to get the chocolate too thick. "
Prue Leith: "If the chocolate is too thick, then breaking it will risk breaking the inner cake as well. The outer chocolate casing should be beautifully fragile."
Time Allowed:
4 hours

What did we learn from the Showstopper?
Almost every week during a series of The Great British Baking Show ™, it is true that the Showstopper Challenge does not represent anything that a typical baker would ever make at home. Therefore, most often we will not study the baker's dishes (since we'll never want to replicate them) - instead we'll highlight interesting elements of the bakes.
